Alaska Mountaineering Trip
Kahiltna Glacier, denali national park

11:10 pm | Heading for control tower.

on thin ice | We repeatedly fell through the top of the glacier into small crevasses, or slots, on the way to control tower. It was hot so a lot of slots opened up during the day.

Crevasse after crevasse | Very few people climb on the Kahiltna after June. The reason is obvious. Less snow and higher temperatures results in more crevasses opening up and/or getting bigger.

Picket Fence | I set a picket (anchor) above a slot on the slopes of Control Tower.

Cresting a ridge | Derek (foreground) and I (background) crest a ridge near the summit of Control Panel.

exposure | Walking along a ridge (I'm in front) on the way to the summit.

Anchors away | Our guide sets another picket anchor.

One small step | Stepping over a ridge, the other rope team is visible down the slope.

traffic jam | We wait while a route is set up the final pitch to the summit.

secure | Carmen clips into the anchor on the final pitch.

wide angle | This is actually a shot on the descent, but it shows the scale of the final pitch of the mountain. The three dots are the other rope team descending.

2:00 am | Taking a breather on the summit of Control Tower.

happy campers | Celebrating at the top prior to heading back down.
